Traditions:

Philippine culture is a mixture of Eastern and Western culture, as it has a shared heritage with other Asian nations (such as Malaysia and China), heavy American influence, and small Hispanic influences that are derived from the cultures Spain and Mexico.

Intimate family bond is upheld to the highest degree. Consequently, respect for parents and elders are extremely valued. A Filipino character is highly defined on how he/she respect his or her family and elders. Superstitions and other cosmic beliefs such as Feng Shui that are brought by the Chinese are still common and somehow affect decision makings of some Filipinos.

Friendship, nationalism and commitment are greatly appreciated in culture of Philippines.

Interestingly enough, English language is commonly used in Philippines and shows trends of American influence in the spoken style, basketball, fast-food joints, sprouting interest in American music and movies.

Celebrations:

New Year Day begins with a bang on the very first day of the year. In the provinces people use home made bamboo cannons to shoot the old year out of and the New Year into their modest live. In the cities, New Year is celebrated with fireworks and hooting horns. New Year's Day is more of a family holiday than Christmas. It is combined with Rizal Day on 30 December to provide time for people to go home to their province.

Procession of the Black Nazarene is celebrated when thousands of men parade through the streets with the life-size statue of the Nazarene which dates from the 17th century. Women can watch, but they cannot join. The event draws massive crowds, since touching the statue is supposed to produce astounding effects.

The Moriones festival is celebrated when Marinduque Crowds of town people dress up as a Roman legionaries and figures from the Bible.

Flores de Mayo is a gentle and esthetically pleasing fiesta which lasts for four week long. Every day, little girls in festive costume present fresh flowers to the Virgin Mary in church and at the end of the month the May festival culminates in processions and parades.

Alcohol:

18 years is the minimum age limit for consuming alcohol.

Sports and Hobbies:

The excellent tropical climate in Philippines allows the inhabitants of Philippines to spend a great extent of their free time in the outdoors and gradually this has led to the emerging popularity of various games in Philippines. Sports are so popular in Philippines since late nineteenth century that it forms an intrinsic aspect of the culture of Philippines. In Philippines, Alona Beach at Panglao and the islands of Panglao, Balicasag and Pamilacan in Bohol provide some of the best diving spots in this planet.

There are 5 major sports in the Philippines. These are basketball, boxing, billiards, soccer, and volleyball. Despite being a tropical nation, ice skating is a popular sport in the Philippines. Sports such as athletics, weightlifting, aerobics, and martial arts are also a popular recreation.
